What is an Equity Indexed Annuity (EIA) ?

An equity indexed annuity is a special type of contract between you and an insurance company. EIAs are more complex than fixed annuities, but have some of the same characteristics.  The return on an EIA varies more than that of a fixed annuity.

Once you make a deposit into your EIA, either in a lump sum or a series of payments, the insurance company credits you with a return that is linked to changes in an equity index, such as the S&P 500.

PLEASE NOTE - You are not buying stock or investing directly in any index.

It seems that most people who buy CDs at their local bank buy them for savings and don't think much about it .  This is money that you don't need for day-to-day living expenses. CDs are purchased in terms of 1 year; 3 years; 5 years; or longer and if you surrender them early, there will be penalties.

The same goes with annuities - they are long-term vehicles designed for retirement or other long-term planning.  If you surrender an annuity early, there will be penalties.

Fixed Annuities

What exactly do you earn when the market goes up ?
Equity Indexed Annuities credit you with anywhere from 50 to 100 percent of the price gain of the market -- excluding dividends. The percentage rate you earn (called the participation rate) may change from year to year.

What happens if stock prices decline ?
This depends on how your annuity is indexed. In general, if the stock market goes down, you can not earn as much or maybe nothing at all. However, the good news is, the main purpose of an Equity Indexed Annuity is to protect your capital.

Equity Indexed Annuites have proven to be excellent savings vehicles in the right situations, but they are long-term vehicles.

If your CDs are earning 2% or 3% and this is money that you don't need for the next several years, then an EIA just might be what you've been looking for.

Features associated with EIAs . . .
  • Interest Rate Caps.
Indicates the maximum rate of interest the annuity can earn.  Let's assume your EIA has a "Cap" of 8% and the index linked to your annuity gained 7.5% --your EIA would be credited with the entire 7.5% gain.  On the ohter hand, if the index gained 9%, your annuity would be credited with the maximum of 8%.
  • Participation Rate.
This feature determines just how much of the index's increase will be used to compute the index-linked interest rate.  EXAMPLE:  Your EIA has a 100% "Participation Rate" and the index increases 7.5% - your annuity would be credited with the entire 7.5% gain (cannot exceed "cap").
